Reading 1
Joel 2:12-18
Even now, says the LORD, return to me with your whole heart,
with fasting, and weeping, and mourning;
Rend your hearts, not your garments, and return to the LORD, your God.
For gracious and merciful is he, slow to anger, rich in kindness,
and relenting in punishment.
Perhaps he will again relent and leave behind him a blessing,
Offerings and libations for the LORD, your God.
Blow the trumpet in Zion!
proclaim a fast, call an assembly;
Gather the people, notify the congregation;
Assemble the elders, gather the children
and the infants at the breast;
Let the bridegroom quit his room and the bride her chamber.
Between the porch and the altar let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep,
And say, "Spare, O LORD, your people, and make not your heritage a reproach,
with the nations ruling over them!
Why should they say among the peoples,
'Where is their God?'"
Then the LORD was stirred to concern for his land
and took pity on his people.

Brothers and sisters:
We are ambassadors for Christ,
as if God were appealing through us.
We implore you on behalf of Christ,
be reconciled to God.
For our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin,
so that we might become the righteousness of God in him.
Working together, then,
we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain.
For he says:
In an acceptable time I heard you,
and on the day of salvation I helped you.
Behold, now is a very acceptable time;
behold, now is the day of salvation.

Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18
Jesus said to his disciples:
"Take care not to perform righteous deeds
in order that people may see them;
otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father.
When you give alms,
do not blow a trumpet before you,
as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets
to win the praise of others.
Amen, I say to you,
they have received their reward.
But when you give alms,
do not let your left hand know what your right is doing,
so that your almsgiving may be secret.
And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.
"When you pray,
do not be like the hypocrites,
who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners
so that others may see them.
Amen, I say to you,
they have received their reward.
But when you pray, go to your inner room,
close the door, and pray to your Father in secret.
And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.
"When you fast,
do not look gloomy like the hypocrites.
They neglect their appearance,
so that they may appear to others to be fasting.
Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you fast,
anoint your head and wash your face,
so that you may not appear to be fasting,
except to your Father who is hidden.
And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you."

여호와께서 말씀하시되, 지금이라도 온 마음을 다하여 내게로 돌아오라.
금식하고, 울고, 애통하며;
옷을 찢지 말고 마음을 찢고, 주 너희 하나님께로 돌아오라.
그는 은혜로우시고 자비로우시며, 노하기를 더디하시고, 인자하심이 풍부하시며,
형벌을 내리시는 데에 뜻을 돌이키시는 이시니라.
아마도 그는 다시 뜻을 돌이키시고 축복을 남기시리라.
주 너희 하나님께 제물과 제주를 드리리라.
시온에서 나팔을 불어라!
금식을 선포하고, 회중을 소집하여라.
백성을 모아 회중에게 알리고,
장로들을 모으고, 아이들과
젖먹이를 모아라.
신랑은 자기 방에서 나가고, 신부는 자기 방에서 나가게 하여라.
현관과 제단 사이에서 여호와의 사역자인 제사장들이 울며 말하라.
말하라. "여호와여, 당신의 백성을 아끼시고 당신의 유업을 욕되게 하지 마소서.
그들을 다스리는 민족들에게!
왜 그들이 민족들 사이에서 '그들의 하느님은 어디 있느냐?'라고 말해야 하겠습니까?

형제 자매 여러분,
우리는 그리스도의 사절입니다.
마치 하느님께서 우리를 통해 호소하시는 것처럼.

하나님과 화해하라.
그분께서는 죄를 알지 못하시는 자를 우리를 위하여 죄로 삼으셨으니,
그분 안에서 우리가 하나님의 의가 되게 하려 하심이니라.
그러므로 우리는 함께 일하여,
하나님의 은혜를 헛되이 받지 말라고 간청하노라.
그분께서 말씀하셨으니,

자선을 베풀 때는 위선자들이 회당과 거리에서 하는 것처럼 너희 앞에서 나팔을 불지 말라.
그들은 칭찬을 받으려고 한다.
진실로 너희에게 이르노니, 그들은 이미 상을 받았느니라.
그러나 자선을 베풀 때는 오른손이 하는 일을 왼손이 모르게 하여,
네 자선이 은밀하게 되게 하라.
그러면 은밀한 가운데 보시는 너희 아버지께서 갚아 주실 것이다.
"기도할 때는 위선자들처럼 하지 말라. 그들은 회당과 거리 모퉁이에 서서 기도하기를 좋아한다.
그들은 남에게 보이려고 한다.
진실로 너희에게 이르노니, 그들은 이미 상을 받았다.
그러나 기도할 때는 안방에 들어가
문을 닫고 은밀히 계시는 네 아버지께 기도하라.
그러면 은밀히 보시는 네 아버지께서 갚아 주실 것이다.
"너희가 금식할 때는
위선자들처럼 침울한 표정을 짓지 말라.
그들은 자기들의 모습을 소홀히 하여
다른 사람들에게 금식하는 것처럼 보이려 하느니라.
진실로 너희에게 이르노니, 그들은 상을 받았느니라.
그러나 금식할 때는
머리에 기름을 바르고 얼굴을 씻어라.
그러면 금식하는 것처럼 보이지 아니하되
숨겨진 네 아버지께만 보이려 하느니라.
그러면 숨은 것을 보시는 네 아버지께서 갚아 주실 것이다."
